FOURTEEN LINES BETWEEN UNRELATED THINGS

I won’t cry about the beehive they bulldozed

for the luxury prep school tennis court

because we’re nothing more than drones and not

all kids are welcome on those courts

there are more significant tragedies every day

so don’t let me become that insensitive asshole

who mourns my grandfather’s death

even though he made it to his seventies and even though

there are more important grandfathers

who deserve more condolences

don’t let me forget that so many other grandfathers

died in wars they didn’t start or died for something worth believing

don’t let me forget all the grandfathers who died as single moms

or died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

don’t let my eyes ever water unless

sinuses feel the sting of wildflower pollen
