Tanya L. Young

MULATTA

I want to ask (her)

            White woman,

Can you see yourself in me?

Can you grow out of pastures, pressed by intuition?

I’d ask (say)

             White woman,

How far can you go till’

                          you grow near me?

Come down to my plot of land, my mother

                                                    was your color, too.

But your ships are empty

and still too full to ride.
